Who We Are
Alzheimer's Australia Gold Coast Inc is one of the few community organisations providing dementia specific care on the Gold Coast and we are keen to provide the best possible services to you the carer, and your family member for friend.
We genuinely want to help you by providing practical and flexible assistance that meets your changing needs and those of the person you care for. You may find there are hurdles along this journey you are taking and we know that over time, your role could mean providing care 24 hours, 7 days a week. People with dementia respond well to routine and the earlier this is established the easier it will be for you.
HISTORY OF ALZHEIMER’S AUSTRALIA, GOLD COAST INC.
1986 was a great year for Alzheimer’s Australia Gold Coast Inc. This was the first year that interested family carers met and a Carer Support Group began. Incorporated status was also granted this year to Alzheimer’s Australia Gold Coast Inc, and we opened our first Day Care Centre at Helensvale Nursing Home run by volunteers.
Thanks to HACC (Home and Community Care) we were granted funding for Day Care Services in 1987, which enabled us to move to rented premises in Burleigh Waters.
During 1988 Alzheimer’s Australia Gold Cost Inc moved into new premises at Miami which where they purchased a three bedroom suburban home and modified it.
We added an In Home Care Suite of Services in 1993 and later that year we were fortunate enough to open a brand new Respite Centre at Arundel.
Overnight Care began at our new premises at Arundel in 1995 with offered Carers and extended period of Respite. This program is funded by NRCP (National Carers Respite Program)
We were fortunate enough to lease a property in Mudgeeraba between 1996 and 2009 this enabled us to offer extended services in the Hinterland and Southern end of the Gold Coast. Unfortunately we had to vacate these premises in July 2009.
CURRENTLY the organisation:
Continues to receive program funds from both HACC and NRCP.
Services are currently delivered from three sites – one in Arundel and two in Nerang.
The Arundel site is the administrative centre and supplies day care and extended care 5 days a week, and overnight and twilight care four nights a week.
Both sites in Nerang are rented. One houses a Carer Support Services Co-ordinator who provides advice
and support for clients, and runs a monthly Carer Support Group. It also houses the administration office of the in-home services.
The second Nerang site, at the Nerang Neighbourhood Centre provides day care services to one group of clients who live at the southern end of the Gold Coast, as well as being the home base for an “Out and About” program for a group of more mobile clients with younger onset dementia, who are able to enjoy visits to a number of different community venues.
